Lueders: Request for Cronon’s emails was lawful

The UW is right to shield emails whose release would violate student confidentiality. But Chancellor Biddy Martin’s call to exclude “the private email exchanges among scholars that fall within the orbit of academic freedom and all that is entailed by it” seems overbroad.

Academic freedom means people have the right to speak their minds, not that they are exempt from the rules in place for other public employees.
