State officials have been unable to provide specifics on why it took more than four months to produce test results confirming that an emaciated deer shot by authorities in northwestern Wisconsin was infected with chronic wasting disease.

The delay has pushed back critical surveillance work that could help authorities determine the extent of the wildlife disease in a new area of the state.
