Alleged sex assault may lead to change in state mandatory reporting law

A 9-year-old special education student was allegedly sexually assaulted on at least three separate occasions between Dec. 21 and Jan. 10 at Olympia Brown, 5915 Erie St. But the apparent abuse was not reported until after the third incident even though all three incidents were observed by educational assistants at the school.

The delay in reporting has prompted a police investigation and has called into question a state law that requires teachers and some other school staff report abuse while leaving out educational assistants.
