Former Wisconsin Energy Chairman McNeer convicted in attack on wife

McNeer, 85, pleaded guilty to the felony and not guilty by reason of mental defect as part of a plea negotiation. He earlier faced a charge of first-degree attempted homicide.

Washington County Circuit Judge Todd Martens accepted the lesser charge and McNeer’s pleas Thursday before ordering a pre-sentencing report to help determine whether to commit McNeer to a mental institution or to release him with conditions. Martens ruled Thursday that the felony conviction would carry a 20-year sentence.
