Appleton School Board requires all employees to report suspected abuse

They should always have been required to do so, and should always have done so even without a state or local requirement.

The policy revision comes as a case involving former Appleton special education teacher Mary Berglund, who was accused last school year of physically abusing children with cognitive disabilities in her classroom, works its way through Calumet County Court.

Editor: That’s not the full story – the full story is that other employees likely knew, and did not report, suspected abuse because they fell outside the scope of the state reporting statute.
