An argument over a prized State Street panhandling spot escalated Monday afternoon after a 56-year old man pulled a small knife from his pocket and threatened to cut a 50-year old man. Both were vying for a popular position in the 500 block where panhandlers take turns “shaking the cup.”
The knife wielding man was arrested. He told the arresting officer that the victim had been hogging the spot all day and not allowing anyone else to “earn” money.
